Wednesday, May 30, 2007 Great Day!!!
There are two stories in the news today that hopefully indicate a shift in the national discourse. First is this story from Military.com . It says that Cindy Sheehan has resigned as the "leader" of the Iraq war protesters.
Also, and even better in my opinion , it looks like Fred Thompson is going to run. I'm in. Thompson for President. Now there is something I can really get behind. And I will!
Sheehan is out, Thompson is in. This really is a great day.
Tuesday, May 22, 2007 Immigration Reform?
I don't know if the current immigration bill is going to pass the senate, let alone the house. I hope it doesn't because I think the President will sign it if it does and that's probably not a good thing. I don't trust anyone on either side on this issue. I think they are all trying to find some "common ground" which means a compromise. The core issue here is sovereignty. The sovereignty of the United States. This is something on which there can be no compromise.
Furthermore, I think it would be a very useful exercise if those for whom it seem so important to legitimize the illegal and illegitimate activity of these so called immigrants to spend a week or so down here living and working among them. They will get a lesson on what is really going on here in a hurry. The vast majority of those who come here illegally not only do not respect our border, they don't even believe in it. To them, there is no border. This is their land, and they mean to do whatever they damn well please with it.
My experience is that these people are as disrespectful to me, as an American, as they are to our border. They are not interested in assimilating into our culture, they are interested in assimilating us into theirs. A large proportion of these people are peasants. Not just peasants, but what seems to be a majority? can only be described as Luddites. Illegal immigration is not an issue to be resolved, it is a problem to be solved. A serious problem. There is no way you can convince me that we need a peasant class in the United States.
To solve the problem is simple, at least in principal. I realize that actually getting it done will take a lot of hard work, but then that's true of most worthwhile goals. All that is needed is to enforce that laws that are already out there. In particular, we must focus on the existing laws at two critical points.
First, the border. Allocate the necessary assets to the border to allow for the laws already on the books to be fully enforced. Second, the workplace. Allocate the necessary assets to enforce the laws already in place against hiring illegal workers. It is not as difficult as one might think to do a basic background check on someone, or at least verify their SSN as valid, just ask any gun shop owner.
If they can't get across the border in any significant numbers, and the ones already here can't get any work, then the problem will solve it self. It will take a while, probably several years for the full effect of this policy to come about, but it will happen. Only a policy that stops the flow if illegal immigrants, and removes the incentives for those already here to stay can be called "comprehensive" immigration reform. Anything else is political crap of the first order.
Tuesday, April 17, 2007 It's the guns, stupid.
With the horrible events at Virginia Tech yesterday the anti gun fanatics are at it again. According to them, the tragedy happened because of the type of gun the guy had. This is, of course, a dangerous and despicable position to take considering the alternative. What alternative? What if one of the first two people the guy shot, or a bystander, had been armed. Maybe those two would have been the only one's, maybe not even that. This event does not prove that guns are bad, or that they should be banned so this won't happen again. What this proves is what I've said a thousand times and will say again here. The second amendment says what it says because one is more likely to survive a fire fight than a massacre.
